Sildenafil Citrate (Revatio®,Viagra®)
HISTORY: Sildenafil Citrate, marketed under the trade names Viagra® and Revatio®, is a powerful vasodilator. It works by relaxing smooth muscle in blood vessels throughout the body which results in an increase in blood flow. Pfizer initially targeted the drug to treat male erectile dysfunction, but some PAH specialists prescribed the drug for off-label use to their patients. Anecdotal evidence was positive for many patients, prompting Pfizer to organize a number of clinical trials which would expand the use of and increase the demand for its product.
FDA approval date for Revatio: June 03, 2005
RECOMMENDED FOR: Revatio is prescribed to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (WHO Group I) to improve exercise ability and help lessen symptoms and slow down worsening changes in your physical condition. Revatio has not been studied in patients taking bosentan.
HOW ADMINISTERED: The differences between Viagra and Revatio are mostly superficial. Viagra is a blue and diamond-shaped tablet. Revatio is round and white. The dosing is different, but chemically they are the same. Both are oral medications. For treatment of PAH, this drug - in whatever form your doctor prescribes it - must be taken three or more times per day at equal intervals. It is important to take this drug as directed by your physician. You will probably begin at a low dose and be asked to build up to a target maintenance level. FOLLOW THE LABELING INSTRUCTIONS ON YOUR MEDICATION WHICH REPRESENTS THE DOSAGE YOUR DOCTOR INTENDED FOR THE CONDITION YOU ARE BEING TREATED.
FDA approval date for sildenafil citrate 20mg tablets (Generic equivalent to Revatio): November 6, 2012
Sildenafil citrate 20mg tablets CANNOT be substituted for any Rx written for Viagra, however, similar strength dosages can substitute for Viagra.

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Revatio USES: Sildenafil is used to treat high blood pressure in the lungs (pulmonary hypertension). Vision changes such as increased sensitivity to light, blurred vision, or trouble telling blue and green colors apart may also occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. To reduce the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Rarely, sudden decreased vision in one or both eyes (NAION) may occur. This effect may or may not be caused by sildenafil. Get medical help right away if you have any very serious side effects, including: increased shortness of breath or trouble breathing. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
